The Society was founded in 1969 by an international group of specialists to promote serious study of the philatelic and postal history of the Ryukyu Islands (under United States Administration). Currently members reside throughout the world.

The RPSS was incorporated as a non-profit educational and literary organization in the State of Hawaii. It has no paid employees. It is Affiliate Number 47 of the American Philatelic Society. The principal activity of the Society is the dissemination of philatelic information through its research journal "From the Dragon's Den" (FTDD). It also publishes, as funds are available, monographic studies and specialized catalogues.
